Camping Recipe-Hobos

Hobos

1-Can Cream of Mushroom Soup

1lb ground beef

Vegetables-I use mushrooms, potatoes, carrots, and onions.

Tin Foil

Hobos are a delicious for campers but are simple to make. They are definitely not good for the first night of camping if you usually don’t arrive at your camp site until after dark and are ready to eat. In order to cook Hobos you must have coals from the fire. While burning a fire for coals, put the hamburger meat in a sheet of tin foil and pour on the cream of mushroom soup. Cut up as many vegetables as you want and put them in the tin foil as well. Wrap up your Hobo, and it’d be good measure to double wrap, and put it into the coals of the fire. Depending on how many coals you want depends on how long it will take to cook it. I’ve had some take 15 minutes and some take over an hour. To check and make sure they are done take them out and open up the tin foil.

Most Important Item on a Camping Trip

I’ve been thinking for a couple of days on what I consider to be the most important item to take on a camping trip. I’m the type of camper who likes to take as little as possible and as simple of items as possible, so I will not say something like that flashlight/knife/portable toilet/fire starter/bear killer all-in-one item that everyone thinks is a necessity.  This being said, after just a few minutes of serious thought, I have to say that the most important item to me when I go camping is toilet paper.

Now you may wonder why i say toilet paper and not matches or a knife, but I have a couple of reasons why I think this.  First of all, toilet paper can be a life saver in the woods. I know people that I’ve camped with who had their trip ruined because they had to use leaves, newspapers, or paper towels. I’ve even camped with someone who was forced to use a shirt of their’s because of the lack of toilet paper. It may be weird to say toilet paper is this important, but I’d much rather be wet, sleep outside(which I actually enjoy more than in a tent), or without utensils, than to ever have to go a trip without toilet paper.  I can go a weekend without cutting something, but not a weekend with a dirty butt.

My second reason is that it can be used in more ways than just its original purpose.  On plenty of trips I’ve used toilet paper as a fire starter, a note pad, a bottle cap, paper towels, a blanket, first aid purposes, and for practical jokes. I know of no other item I can take on a trip that can be used for so many reasons. So toilet paper even though you are something that many campers take advantage of and overlook, today you are king!

Linville Gorge

For the first post on this blog I can’t help but talk about my favorite camping site in the Western North Carolina area, Linville Gorge. Linville Gorge is part of Pisgah National Forest, and is located just 20 to 25 miles from Morganton, NC.

I consider Linville to be my favorite place to camp because of the multiple hiking trails that you have access to when you go and it is only about an hour away from Gardner-Webb University. It is a beautiful area and is also a part of the Appalachian Trail.

I take an annual trip to Linville before New Years with a group of friends and we always hike up to Hawk’s Bill where the picture below was taken. This picture alone shows what can be seen at a trip to Linville Gorge.
